Today is the day that we leave for Helen. I had wanted to run since we would be on the road for the better part of a day, but the shin splints from last year are acting up again, so I settled for a short, quick bike ride, just 5 miles or so. I decided to head to Upper Campus since my dad was running at the track there. I rode hard for the first mile and a half, over to Arbutus Park Road, up the shortcut, past the overlook, and into civilization on Upper Campus. I stopped at the overlook, though; it's something I pretty much always do.
After I passed the track, I slowed down a lot and meandered along a quiet road that ran next to student apartments. There were some great views to the north. At the end of the road, I turned around and headed back, taking a different trail back. I hadn't biked on the new trail before, despite having run there many times. My bike kicked up a lot of mud and dew. There was a lot of tall underbrush on the sides of the quiet trail, but the trail itself was all well-maintained, short grass. At one point, an animal of some kind (perhaps a squirrel or a chipmunk) darted out from the undergrowth, literally ran right between my wheels. Strange creature.
After a while, I returned to Arbutus Park Road and headed home. The Garmin and camera are both already packed, so no maps or pictures. We're departing in an hour or so, so there's no time for any more rides :/
PS: This has nothing to do with the ride in any way, shape or form, but it was three years ago today that I registered my Wikipedia account and started editing.
Congrats, already three years!have a nice vacation in Helen!
